What is life really like years after bariatric surgery?

Surgery can bring major benefits, but the story does not end with weight loss. Experiences also reveal what aftercare, symptoms, medicines and daily life can mean years later.

More than a before-and-after story

The years after surgery deserve more attention

A gastric bypass or another bariatric procedure can greatly improve health and quality of life. Experiences after one, five or ten years can still differ widely. Some people remain very well, while others face deficiencies, dumping, abdominal symptoms, weight regain, altered medicine effects or uncertainty about who coordinates follow-up care.

Dutch clinical guidance recommends lifelong follow-up and annual checks. This is why it matters to describe not only the procedure and early weight loss, but also what happens afterwards.

Experiences show what figures cannot tell us

Figures describe procedures, weight loss and complications. Experiences also show what this means in daily life: which questions were not asked beforehand, how follow-up care works and what people may face years later. Zorgfuik places those experiences alongside guidelines and official information, without treating one account as the standard.

You do not need to write a medical report. A short account of what went well, what was unexpected and which follow-up support was or was not available can already help. Anonymous submissions are welcome.

Five clear routes through the dossier

People do not all have the same question. Some want to know which checks remain important, others seek recognition for symptoms or want to understand daily life years later. Each subject therefore has its own page with relevant guidance and sources.

Important: personal experiences are not medical evidence and do not replace assessment or treatment advice. New, severe or rapidly worsening symptoms require professional medical assessment.

Your experience can complete the picture

Positive, mixed and difficult accounts are welcome. A short and anonymous submission is fine too.
