MedMij is a framework, not a medical record
MedMij defines legal, technical, organisational and security rules for exchange between your PGO and a healthcare provider’s information system. Participating suppliers must demonstrate compliance.
It is
A framework, network and recognisable label for secure and reliable exchange.
It is not
Not a PGO app, patient portal, national database or complete medical record.
Nor is it
Not a provider and not an organisation that diagnoses, checks clinical content or coordinates care.
How MedMij relates to a PGO
The PGO
The app or website you choose, where you create an account, view data and use available features.
MedMij
The shared rules and facilities that let participating PGO and provider systems exchange information.
The PGO is like your letterbox; MedMij sets the rules for the secure delivery route. MedMij itself is not where you open a medical record.
Read what a PGO can do, how to choose one and why records may be missing.
What does the MedMij label mean?
The label shows that a participating supplier meets the MedMij framework for the relevant role and services. It can appear on PGOs, healthcare-system suppliers and connected providers.
The label concerns secure, reliable exchange through MedMij. It does not guarantee that every provider is connected, every record type is available, source data is complete or correct, or every PGO feature is free.

How does retrieving data work?
You choose
Select a labelled PGO and a connected provider.
You identify yourself
Use the DigiD app with ID check so the provider knows it is you.
Systems exchange
Participating suppliers provide the secure connection and agreed formats.
Your PGO receives a copy
Available data appears in your PGO; the source record stays with the provider.
Security and privacy
The framework contains requirements for information security, privacy, technology, accessibility and oversight. A labelled PGO provider may not sell health information in your PGO. Only you, or a legally authorised representative, can retrieve data through MedMij. Sharing starts with your permission.
Secure does not mean risk-free. Protect your device and account, share only what is needed and check whom you authorise. Ask the source provider to correct clinical content; technical problems may also require your PGO provider.
What MedMij does not solve
Availability
Not every provider or sector exchanges yet, and connections may support only selected data services.
Completeness
Exchange returns the agreed available information, not automatically every item in every record.
Clinical quality
MedMij does not assess whether diagnoses, medicine lists or other source data are current and correct.
Care coordination
Secure exchange does not decide who links decisions, resolves conflicts or accepts overall responsibility.
Good data exchange is essential infrastructure, but infrastructure is not coordinated care. MedMij can move data safely; people and organisations still need to take responsibility for what follows.
