Fibromyalgia, work and UWV: describing functional limits
A diagnosis names a condition; it does not automatically show what someone can sustainably do. In work and UWV assessments, concrete functioning, recovery time and consistency over days and weeks are central.
Fluctuating pain, fatigue, poor sleep and concentration problems can make work capacity unpredictable. A useful record translates symptoms into activities, duration, frequency, recovery and the consequences of exceeding limits.
Diagnosis versus functional limitations
Two people with the same diagnosis can have different capacities. Describe what happens when you sit, stand, walk, lift, switch tasks, handle deadlines or concentrate. Include how often an activity is possible, for how long and what recovery is needed afterwards.
Sustainable capacity
A good day is not the same as capacity that can be repeated five days a week. Record patterns over several weeks, including delayed worsening after activity, sleep disruption, absence and the need to reduce private activities to keep working.
Occupational physician and return to work
The occupational physician assesses the relationship between health and work and advises employee and employer about suitable duties and gradual return. Discuss adjusted hours, predictable tasks, fewer interruptions, ergonomic changes, rest opportunities and evaluation dates. The employer does not need your diagnosis, but does need the practical agreements.
Preparing for a WIA assessment
After a long period of illness, UWV assesses remaining earning capacity using medical and vocational information. Bring a concise timeline, current medication and treatments, reports from clinicians and concrete examples of limitations. Consistency matters more than dramatic wording.
Objectifiability
Fibromyalgia often has no single biomarker. That does not remove the duty to assess, but it can make substantiation more dependent on a coherent history, examination, medical records, observed course and consistency between symptoms and functioning. Ask which information is missing if a limitation is not accepted.
During and after the assessment
Check whether the report reflects the duration, frequency and recovery associated with activities. If something is factually wrong, respond specifically and keep copies. For an objection or legal question, seek timely help from a union, legal adviser or specialised support organisation; Zorgfuik does not provide individual legal advice.
A practical one-page overview
Use five headings: main symptoms; ordinary week; activities and limits; recovery and variability; treatment and adjustments tried. Add two or three concrete examples, such as how a two-hour appointment affects the following day.
FAQ
Does UWV recognise fibromyalgia?
UWV does not grant benefits solely on the name of a diagnosis. The assessment concerns medically plausible functional limitations and remaining earning capacity.
Must I tell my employer my diagnosis?
In the Netherlands, the employer normally needs information about work-related possibilities and agreements, not your medical diagnosis. The occupational physician handles medical information.
What if my capacity fluctuates?
Describe the frequency, triggers, recovery time and pattern over several weeks. Explain what is sustainably repeatable, not only what is possible once.
What documents are useful?
A concise timeline, treatment and medication overview, relevant clinician reports and concrete examples of functioning can help. More pages are not automatically stronger evidence.
Can Zorgfuik advise on my WIA case?
No. Zorgfuik provides general information and identifies patterns, but does not give individual medical or legal advice.
